Birka is the first Viking settlement, founded around 760 AD. With its antiquities above and below the ground, it is one of the best-preserved examples of a Viking Age trading site and unique testimony to the far-reaching trade relations of the Vikings. In 1993, Unesco decided to add Birka to the World Heritage List. You can see some pictures of this fascinating place, with David, in June 2000.
